18-26/3 Don’t be divided, Stay UNITED!

Don’t be divided, Stay UNITED!
European Action Week Against Racism 2017

From 18-26 March, hundreds of activities will take place all over Europe to protest against racism and advocate for open, inclusive, and UNITED societies.

Organisations all over Europe are preparing activities to mark the European Action Week Against Racism. Organised by UNITED for Intercultural Action, a European network of antiracist NGOs, this annual campaign sees civil society groups, educational institutions and city governments come together to protest against racism and celebrate the diversity that enriches European societies.

In light of the divisive political rhetoric that has gripped Europe in recent years, the message of the 2017 Action Week campaign is simple: Don’t be divided, Stay UNITED!

“We are living in a time where the core ideas of European culture and identity are questioned and there is a confusion of values.” Said UNITED Programme Coordinator Balint Josa. “UNITED believes in solidarity and equality, and the possibility of different identities living in peace together. Taking action in defence of these ideas is the responsibility of everyone, so it’s vital that as many people as possible take part in activities organised by our network to mark this important annual campaign.”

The campaign is based around 21 March, the anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa in 1960, which in 1966 was recognised by the UN as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. UNITED has been coordinating an annual antiracism campaign around this date since 1993.

You can find more information about the campaign, including an interactive map showing the hundreds of activities taking place across Europe, and the city governments who have joined the campaign, at www.weekagainstracism.eu

===
UNITED is the pan-European network against nationalism, racism, fascism and in support of migrants and refugees, supported by more than 550 organisations from 48 European countries. How to join the network: see www.unitedagainstracism.org/supporters

This campaign has been made possible with support of the Council of Europe (European Youth Foundation) and the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

16/3 Årets Hugo Valentin-föreläsning hålls av Christopher R. Browning

March 7th, 2017 No comments

Årets Hugo Valentin-föreläsning hålls av Christopher R. Browning
Uppsala universitet

Till hans viktigaste verk hör The Path to Genocide (1992), Nazi Policy, Jewish Workers, German Killers (2000), Collected Memories: Holocaust History and Postwar Testimony (2003) och The Origins of the Final Solution (2004).

Ett av hans mest kända arbeten är Ordinary Men: Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solu-tion in Poland (1992).

Holocaust Memorial Museum, Institute for Advanced Studies i Princeton och Hebrew University.

Föreläsning: Surviving Slave Labour: The Camp Complex at the Starachowice Factories
Tid: 16 mars kl. 17:00
Plats: Brusewitzsalen, ingång Östra Ågatan 19
Arrangör: Hugo Valentin-centrum, Uppsala universitet

2017 Theme: Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education

http://www.un.org/en/events/motherlanguageday/

To foster sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. It is through the mastery of the first language or mother tongue that the basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy are acquired. Local languages, especially minority and indigenous, transmit cultures, values and traditional knowledge, thus playing an important role in promoting sustainable futures.

International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 (30C/62).

On 16 May 2007 the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/61/266 called upon Member States “to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world”. By the same resolution, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages, to promote unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism.

International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date represents the day in 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh.

Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

Wednesday 12 December 2016
Obs – du måste anmäla dig i tid
